David Reeves

Group Chief Executive Officer

David has been Barbican's CEO since its formation in November 2007 and was one of the founding directors.

David is a graduate chartered accountant with extensive hands-on underwriting and financial management experience. Prior to setting up Barbican, David was director of RSA’s commercial division responsible for six specialty underwriting units – reinsurance, aviation, nuclear, international construction, financial solutions, and ART. 

Previously, as finance director of RSA’s commercial division, David had led the re-organisation and re-underwriting of the multinational and London Market portfolio. Before entering the insurance industry, David was a general manager for Sky TV and News International.

Mark has been Barbican's CUO since our launch in November 2007 and was one of the founding directors.

Mark brings a wide range of operational and underwriting experience to  Barbican with a proven track record as an innovative and profitable active underwriter in the Lloyd’s market. Having previously been underwriting manager for Zurich Re and casualty underwriter for CNA Re, Mark joined QBE in 1998 to write North American casualty for Syndicate 1223. He led the formation of Syndicate 2000 as a specialist reinsurance unit and following the acquisition of Limit Underwriting was also appointed active underwriter for Syndicate 79.

Jon Godfray

Group Chief Operating Officer

Jon has been Barbican's COO since joining Barbican in July 2008 as one of the founding directors.

Jon is a business graduate who began his career as a management accountant in the UK transport industry before moving on to head up the commercial products division at the RAC motoring organisation. In 1998 he was recruited to Citibank; responsible for services to global corporations and financial institutions. From here, he moved on to become head of operations for Royal Sun Alliance’s London and specialist businesses, managing more than 600 staff. Jon also secured an MA in Marketing during this period.

His last role with RSA saw him head up the marine insurance division. In 2002 Jon was appointed head of operations for Endurance Worldwide in London, responsible for claims, policy services and all aspects of business administration. Subsequently becoming chief operations officer taking management responsibility for the property and marine business units before becoming overall platform leader in 2007.

Chris is the chairman of Barbican and portfolio manager at Carlson Capital.

Chris joined Carlson Capital in 2003 and has been instrumental in developing many of its new strategies, including its corporate fixed income, mortgage, and private equity businesses.  Prior to Carlson, he was involved in the financial markets as an advisor and a principal investor, including time at Lehman Brothers (London), RBC Capital Markets, Stephens, Inc., and Alex Brown & Sons.

Chris received a B.S. in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia

Roy Trice

Director

Roy is a non-executive board member of Barbican Insurance Group and brings over 30 years of investment experience working in a variety of public and private investment vehicles. He is one of the founding partners of Canyon Road Capital L.P. and is responsible for the overall direction of the business, including risk management, administrative organization and institutional investor relationships. He also serves as a non-executive board member of TransEngen.


Prior to forming Canyon Road Capital, Roy was the chief operating officer and an equity partner of Carlson Capital, L.P., a Dallas based, non-directional hedge fund which manages in excess of $5 billion. As chief operating officer, Roy’s responsibilities included; building, staffing and managing Carlson’s operations, as well as, developing and managing the investor relations and marketing group.  In addition to serving as chief operating officer for Carlson, he served on Carlson's management committee, multiple operating and risk management committees, and as a member of the firm's board of directors. He has also held various positions with the Redstone Companies (Houston), Kidder Peabody/PaineWebber (Houston), Texas Commerce Bank (now JPMorgan Chase, Houston) and Arthur Andersen (Houston).


Roy holds a BBA in Accounting from Texas A&M University.

Michael Weinberg

Mike is a managing director of special projects at Carlson Capital.

Mike has been employed at Carlson Capital since 1999 in a variety of investment and operational capacities. From 1995 to 1999 Mike was director of investments at Richmont Capital Partners, L.P., the investment affiliate of privately-held Mary Kay Cosmetics. Prior to that, he held roles as an analyst with Greenbrier Partners, L.P., a private investment partnership and an associate attorney with Baker and Botts, L.L.P.

Mike is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and holds a B.A. degree from the Plan II Honors Program and a J.D. degree, both from The University of Texas at Austin.

Stephen Britt

General Counsel

Stephen is general counsel and joined Barbican in June 2010.


Stephen is responsible for all of the group’s legal affairs, with particular emphasis on corporate affairs, commercial transactions and general insurance matters (both contentious and non-contentious). As corporate secretary, he advises and supports the Group's Boards and Committees.


Before joining Barbican, Stephen was legal counsel and company secretary at Equitas for over 12 years, prior to which he was in private practice with leading law firms in London and Melbourne.


Stephen holds degrees in Law and Economics from the University of Melbourne. He is a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and High Court of Australia and is admitted to practise as a solicitor in England and Wales.

Ben Canagaretna

Group Chief Actuary

Ben is group chief actuary and joined Barbican in June 2009.


Ben leads the actuarial and exposure management departments within Barbican and brings high levels of systems, processes and data management expertise to the role.


Ben began his career in 2001 at PriceWaterHouseCoopers in the pension consultancy area providing services to a number of FTSE 250 companies. He moved into the insurance industry in 2004, joining the actuarial team at Whittington. Ben then became casualty divisional actuary at Liberty Syndicates with sole responsibility for actuarial output for the casualty division.
 

Lloyd Howson

Lloyd Howson

Group Finance Director

Lloyd joined Barbican as group finance director in May 2015.

He is a chartered accountant with extensive experience in the London Market insurance and reinsurance industry. Having trained with Deloitte, Lloyd joined RSA in 1992 and became finance director supporting the London Market businesses. He then became director of RSA's run-off business, leading a complex part VII transfer and the profitable disposal of two group companies, together with effecting finality solutions for complex insurance/reinsurance contracts. In 2009, Lloyd was made managing director of a fee for service business within RSA and led a business turnaround culminating in a business disposal for value.

Louis Tucker

Director

Louis is a director at Barbican and joined in December 2007.


Louis is a chartered accountant with extensive experience in the insurance industry with both Lloyd’s and non-Lloyd’s companies. Having trained with PricewaterhouseCoopers in London, Louis moved to GenRe as assistant vice president in the finance department. In 2003, Louis moved to Wellington Underwriting plc, where he was responsible for corporate development.


Louis holds a degree in Physiology from the University of Bristol.
