Mark Harrington brings a wide range of operational and underwriting experience to the Barbican Syndicate. One of the founding directors of Barbican, Harrington has a powerful track record as an innovative and profitable Active Underwriter in the Lloyd’s market.

Having previously been underwriting manager for Zurich Re and Casualty Underwriter for CNA Re, Harrington joined QBE in 1998 to write North American Casualty for Syndicate 1223. He then led the formation of Syndicate 2000 as a specialist reinsurance unit and following the acquisition of Limit Underwriting was also appointed Active Underwriter for Syndicate 79.

Mark Harrington was instrumental in driving new levels of efficiency; he merged several syndicates into Syndicate 2000, radically improving the cost and effectiveness of reinsurance buying, and sponsored the introduction of risk and price modelling, including RMS. His underwriting record illustrates the success of Harrington’s approach; he has achieved an overall average return of 25% ROE, even achieving a remarkable 12% in the year of Hurricane Katrina.
