Conor Finn has acquired considerable experience in both broking and underwriting during his working life.

For the first 20 years of his career, Conor held a number of senior positions with a variety of different broking houses. But a switch to underwriting beckoned, and in 1997 he started a new Property account at the D.E. Hope Syndicate. Four years later, this became part of Markel International—and Conor was promoted to Divisional Managing Director, building a new Property division, amalgamating many of the previous Octavian and Terra Nova entities.

In 2007, he was asked to take on the role of Director of Business Development for Markel International. However, he preferred the prospect of working with a like-minded team to build a new insurance group, and in late 2007, Conor joined Barbican to head up the Property Division.

Conor Finn says that an underwriter stands or falls on results; his own open market property performance over the past six years has generated an average loss ratio of 55%.
