Barbican Property Reinsurance provides catastrophe excess of loss protection against major natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. We operate worldwide with our main focus being on the major economies—the US, UK, European, Japanese and Australian markets.
Our clients
Our clients range from single state mutuals in the US to large national carriers. We target those with a deep knowledge of their business, strong underwriting controls and a successful track record.
Some 80% of our business is USA Regional Catastrophe. To minimise any conflict with the Barbican Property D&F book, we carefully manage concentrations in Florida and California—we will increase our capacity and diversify our US portfolio.
In the UK and Europe we target mainly single territory business; in Japan, Australia and Canada, we aim for carefully selected good quality business.
Our business relationships
In all sectors, our goal is to build enduring business relationships, developing and offering cross-class solutions to all our clients.
We tend to focus our capacity on well-managed underwriting operations that have a clear strategy and a detailed understanding of their original exposure; in particular, those who value long-term relationships with their re-insurers.
We see the benefits of developing an in-depth understanding of any business with which we get involved. Barbican underwriters will always be prepared to travel to meet both clients and brokers in their home territories to help achieve this.
The shape of our business
During 2009 Barbican took advantage of opportunities in the market to develop the foundations of our Property Reinsurance portfolio.
For 2010 we continue to focus on our five core regions: USA, UK, Western Europe, Japan and Australia.
However, to further develop our International relationships and broaden our US account we will increase our capacity and diversify our US portfolio to now include business from both Florida and California.
